THE TROUSER

THE FRENCH FLY   TAPED SEAMS
The nifty tab-button closure distinguishes a high-quality pair of trousers from your everyday variety. The zipper is attached to an extended waistband, which takes stress off the zipper and ensures that the front lies flat.   Seams are pressed, with their edges taped or piped for reinforcement and to keep them lying flat.

LINED WAISTBAND   LINING WHERE IT COUNTS
The waistband is lined to maintain its shape. Options include a split seam and a V-notch in the back so the trouser can be altered for a perfect fit.   Cuffs add weight and draw attention to the line of the pants. If you're on the short side, forego the cuffs. Cuffed trousers should have a straight hem; an uncuffed hem should be longer in back, hitting the lower heel.

PLEATS (OR NOT)
Pleats provide a touch of volume to the top of your trousers, which helps if you're a man of powerful build. Today, though, most trousers – even when they come with a suit – are flat fronted.
